The chief curator at the Musée d'Orsay has selected sixteen canvases by Édouard Manet (1832-1883) -- the pivotal painter in the transition to Impressionism -- that place his work in the frame of late-19th-century Paris.
.:. Those were the days when the uprising of the Commune was savagely suppressed. Baron Haussmann redesigned Paris and built the boulevard, the wide avenues where any mass demonstrations could be broken up easily. The times they were a-changing. The Eiffel Tower would be inaugurated before long.
.:. You walk along the main floor of the Royal Palace among many other works by great Parisian artists of the era, like Cézanne, Degas, Gauguin, and Renoir. Virtually everything, including the architectural drawings, comes from the Musée d'Orsay. The exhibition is the brainchild of Skira.
