June 18 through July 3, 2016
better not on the weekends, when it's crowded
200,000 polyethene cubes float on
Lake Iseo, holding 70,000 square meters of yellow fabric and thus allowing to walk on the water for four and a half kilometers -- no bikes, pets on a leash -- between the village of Sulzano and the famous
Monte Isola at the center of the lake, then further on to the islet of San Paolo.
.:. The work is the brainchild of
Christo (Vladimirov Javacheff; Gabrovo, Bulgaria, 1935) and his wife Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009), fulfilled in cooperation with local governments and the citizens of the lake. When the mega event ends, the materials are removed and sold. The environmental
art installation is in fact sustainable, both ecologically and financially speaking.
.:. Lake Iseo is found some hundred kilometers east of Milano, and can also be reached by train (several rides every day, about an hour and a half). The dedicated
website provides many more details.
