August 1st through 31, 2018
August is the month when most of the Milanese go on holiday. Signs saying Chiuso per Ferie
, closed for vacation, are posted almost everywhere and things to do and see in town are few and far between. Assorted open-air spots - the Sforza Castle
among them - provide backdrops for a few concerts
and performances: the Notturni in Castello
series is particularly worthwhile.
The city is even more deserted around August 15, called Ferragosto
. When Ferragosto comes next to a weekend, even the diehards surrender and abandon Milan.
Some notable exceptions. Through August, visitors enjoy nearly every day all the Triennale
attractions, the Torre Branca
, and the Poldi Pezzoli
museum. which is free
on Thursday 8 and Thursday 22, and open even the Ferragosto day. The Brera
National Art Gallery, too, is open in August, and the Gallerie d'Italia
are open free
till August 19.
