Attorno a Mantegna
June 16 through September 25, 2016

One of the most exceptional paintings at the Brera National Gallery in Milano is the
Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Andrea
Mantegna. Painted in the late 15th century, it is famous both for the role of its author in the history of art and its strong perspective, which foreshortens the Saviour's figure.
.:. Recent research has lead to think that Mantegna's
Lamentation might have been produced to celebrate the arrival in Mantua of a marble slab, supposedly the one where Christ's body had been put to lay.
.:. Whatever the case, the painting is currently exhibited aside two similar
Lamentations by later artists, for which it clearly was a model. These were made by Annibale
Carracci (1583-1585, on loan from the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart) and Orazio
Borgianni (1615, from the Galleria Spada in Rome).
