This
district on the near outskirts of the city is where two
canals – the
Naviglio Grande coming from the Ticino river and the
Naviglio Pavese flowing towards the town of Pavia – come in close to the center, still in the open air.
.:. The area shows an interesting and dynamic societal mixture. Renovated and restored penthouses are found alongside the traditional poor people's dwellings. Working class people now live door to door with aspiring young intellectuals and upwardly mobile professionals and with the scattered offsprings of the sophisticated "Milano Bene" (well-to-do Milanese).
.:. Since October 12, 2024 the
Naviglio Grande can also be reached, specifically in the romantic outskirt of
San Cristoforo, thanks to the line 4 of the subway, the blue one. (A diagram of the Milan subway system is published in our
public transport webpage.)
.:. In the summertime,
excursions by boat along stretches of the canals leave from the
Darsena at Porta Ticinese. Information and tickets at the
central tourist office at Piazza del Duomo 14.
.:. The Navigli district – particularly the area around
Via Tortona – is where many events of the
Design Week concentrate every April. The
Armani Silos, perhaps the most important fashion museum on the Planet, is here, too, at 40, Via Bergognone.
