The Cortile della Rocchetta (literally, "courtyard of the small fortress") was intended to be the area of ultimate defense of the
Sforza Castle. According to tradition,
Bramante and
Filarete were both involved in the building of its inner wings..
Now almost all of the rooms of the Rocchetta belong to the Castle's art museum. On the first floor of the north-western flank, the
Sala della Balla - itself a part of the museum - is a reconstruction of the big sports hall that was designed to play ball in.
