Thao Nguyen Phan
September 14, 2023 through January 14, 2024

Thảo Nguyên Phan (Ho Chi Minh City, 1987) is a petite lady, her face occasionally enlightened in a sweet smile, who frequently nods when listening to comments about her art, and shows an unusual ability to produce works of different techniques (watercolors, drawings, jewels, videos) resembling Max Ernst's. Joan Jonas was among her teachers and her subject is life, especially the life of her country through the series of dramatic changes it has come across since WW2.
.:. Phan's first solo exhibition in Italy - not by chance entitled Reincarnations of Shadows - is splendidly set up, and looks pretty clear. People, documentaries, objects: everything looks enjoyable and understandable at first sight.
.:. The fact is that this is not the case. Reaching the depth of her artworks takes time. So be prepared to a choice: you can either leave the Hangar in ten minutes quite happy for you ability to get the message, or stay for an hour or so, and get the message for real.
