Piero della Francesca. Il polittico agostiniano riunito
March 20 through June 24, 2024
Piero della Francesca completed his polyptych for the Augustinian church of Borgo San Sepolcro in 1469, but the altar was dismantled in the 1500s. We don't know where the central panel and most of the predella, if still existing, are located today. The other panels belong to leading art museums in Lisbon, London, New York and Milan. Together they would be one of the most incredible works of art ever produced.
.:. Now they are. Augustine, Michael the Archangel, John the Evangelist and Nicholas of Tolentino are together again for a few months, their eyes turned everywhere and nowhere – as Piero inimitably portrayed every human being.
.:. The exhibition was set up by the Milanese architect Italo Rota, who passed away a few days ago. Now Piero and Italo know each other.
