The “Seed Under Our Tongue” referred to in the title of the exhibition has been forged by Ismailova (Tashkent, 1981) into a jewel (pictured). As an Uzbek legend goes, a
date seed hidden under the tongue is passed down through different eras and people until it itself is transformed. The seed embodies beliefs entrusted from generation to generation.
.:. Ismailova's golden seed, however, is only her smallest artwork at the Hangar. Essentially, she is a visual artist. “I think cinema is like a vessel that carries and remembers everything.” In the dark, giant screens display
six films mostly based on interviews, that immerse visitors in the cultural, social and political realities of
Central Asia. The layering of memories, landscapes, personal and collective images and time-through is intricate – and moving.
.:. Ismailova believes that “we are responsible for the seven generations before us and the seven generations to come after us.” Children have to be taught well. We too, therefore, must learn.
