Il Rinascimento a Brescia. Moretto, Romanino, Savoldo 1512-1552
October 18, 2024 through February 16, 2025
Brescia is an attractive, middle-sized town in Northern Italy, closer to Milan than to Venice. It’s really ancient – still exceptionally rich in Roman remains – later becoming a mainland possession of the Republic of Venice, to which it belonged till the end of the 18th century. Brescia was chosen as one of the two Italian Capitals of Culture 2023 (the sister was Bergamo, just a bit to the West), consequently enjoying a well-deserved tourist revamp.
.:. The town’s art heritage is conspicuous. Several exhibitions were organized to celebrate Renaissance painters from Brescia in the last years. Artists like Alessandro Bonvicino known as Moretto (c. 1498-1554), Girolamo Romanino (c. 1485-c. 1566) and Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo (1480/1485-after 1548) starred in the cultural programme of the city museums, the one at Santa Giulia and the Cosio Martinengo art gallery among them.
.:. What’s new and peculiar in the current exhibition at Santa Giulia is the point of view. Art production is contextualized, life conditions of those turbulent decades are vividly documented, and painting’s details are zoomed and analysed to identify fashion trends during the Renaissance. Fascinating as it may be, art is also a source of historical knowledge, after all. The resulting mix is perfect to display the long lasting importance of Brescia and the quality of its style.
