Giorno della memoria
Monday, January 27, 2025

In the late 1938 Antisemitic Racial Laws passed in Italy. Jews were expelled from schools, isolated from the rest of society and their possessions confiscated. Italian responsibility continued through the years. The Laws were not abrogated when the fascist regime falled on July 25 1943 and 8,000 Italian Jews were deported to death camps. In the year 2000 the Italian State established January 27 as the Shoah Memorial Day.
.:. Stolpersteine, or "stumbling stones", are ten-centimetres concrete cube bearing a brass plate inscribed with the name and life dates of victims of Nazi persecution. You find them, and stumble over them, when walking close to houses where victims once lived..
.:. 2024 was the eighth year of the Stolpersteine (in Italian, pietre d'inciampo) project in Milan. Not only they have increased in number these years, but the town is offering a wider range of events to meet and remind. The most important among them is probably a visit to the Memoriale della Shoah (pictured). Admission is free. Reservations are recommended.
