.:. art / a settled debt

Luciano Fabro
October 8, 2026 through February 21, 2027

more pictures .:. The Hangar takes pride in exhibiting a contemporary artist, strictly speaking, along a contemporary “classic”, a critic's darling for decades. It is not surprising, therefore, that performances by Aki Sasamoto, currently on show in the building's Shed wing, were joined by a retrospective of works by Fabro (Turin, 1936-Milan, 2007) displayed in the building's main space. The latter is aptly called the Navate (or Naves), as if the Hangar were a cathedral.
.:. Member of the celebrated Arte Povera movement that began in Italy in the late 1960s, Fabro was a rather peculiar one. He maintained a nonconformist approach that emphasized the concept of “inhabiting space”, as the current exhibition is subtitled. Space, in his view, is a dynamic field of action, whose core is the relationship between the viewer, the artworks and the surrounding environment.
.:. Fabro's “habitats” – as he called them, contrary to the idea of installations – were exhibited in many European leading museums and art centres, including the Tate and the Beaubourg. Fabro's daughter, who actively cooperated with the Hangar, points out that Milan, instead, nearly forgot the artist after the exhibition of his works held at the Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea in 1960. One may well say that the debt of gratitude has been settled.
