The Società Umanitaria has been around since 1893 — a progressive Milanese institution that has always occupied the awkward space between social welfare, education and culture. Every summer its cloisters open up, and the city comes in.
.:. Estate nei Chiostri is the result: a seven-week programme of talks, concerts, theatre, film and exhibitions that runs on weekday evenings through late July. It is not a festival in the glossy sense.
.:. The audience is mixed, the events are mostly free or cheap, and the conversations tend to go somewhere. This year's edition has five recurring series, a documentary, student exhibitions and a run of short theatre pieces.
