.:. art / virtual but real
Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Carne y Arena
June 7, 2017 through January 15, 2018
Subtitled "Virtually Present, Physically Invisible", this is an installation that is not an exhibition. You're asked by the corteous Prada staff to leave your "bloody" - as the artist calls them - socially-connected smartphones as well as your shoes and socks, and enter a dark room wearing virtual reality glasses.
.:. The mix of sand (Arena) and gravel under your bare feet, people with which you interact through your eyes, and voices that resound in your ears provide your provisional reality.
.:. Before entering, you queue for a while. After exiting, you're proposed to watch videos where Mexican refugees - the real reality - tell their stories around la Linea, the border between their country and the USA. This is the subject, in fact.
.:. Iñárritu's effort, following much acclaimed movies like 21 Grams, Birdman, and The Revenant, was included in the Official Selection of the 2017 Festival de Cannes.
.:. Care of Miuccia Prada - the brain of her fashion house, and her art foundation - Carne y Arena is currently presented in Milan in an extensive full version. To quote the press release, it "employs the highest, never-before-used virtual technology to create a large, multi-narrative light space with human characters."
