"Reasoning on paper" was the approach of Romanian-American Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) to his art: drawing
. Apparently naive but often ironic, his mix of bare black-and-white signs with colour explosions created an original language, absolutely suited to 20th-century life.
Steinberg is best known for his contributions to The New Yorker
as a cartoonist and illustrator. Some of his "Views of the World from 9th Avenue", however, moved to Milan, for instance to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (detail above).
The current exhibition at the Triennale, curated by Italo Lupi (a designer and editor) and Marco Belpoliti (a writer), looks less a celebration than a duty. .:.
