.:. art / the boxer
Max Ernst

one picture only
.:. "Max Ernst is a liar, a legacy-hunter, slanderer, cheat, defamer and boxer", noted Ernst about himself. The exhibition's panels write that this sentence is "in ironic
Dadaist terms." Still, it might also be somehow sincere.
.:. It is apparent that Ernst (1891-1976) took no care in promoting himself whatsoever, married a extremely rich lady and collector like Peggy Guggenheim only to leave her a year later, openly made fool of the world as often as he could, and invariably had a great time. He really was Dadaist, after all.
.:. The exhibition is extremely noteworthy in retracing the artist's career (though not in a chronological order), being exceptionally extensive (to the point in might become boring to the layman), and showing Ernst's unbelievable ability in any art technique he chose or even (re)invented from scratch. This is the case of
frottage.
.:. The exhibited artworks are on loan from the GAM in Turin, the Guggenheim Collection and Ca' Pesaro in Venice, London's Tate, the Pompidou Centre, the Cantini Museum in Marseille, the State Museums and the Arp Foundation in Berlin, the Beyeler Foundation in Basel, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. Not bad, indeed.
