Borrowed Light
September 19 through November 2, 2025

one picture only .:. Being appointed as a resident consultant by an astrophysical institution does not happen frequently. Even less so, if you're brought in as an artist. Many years ago, such a peculiar situation involved Laurie Anderson, a musician, who marvelled at the wonderful colours of galaxies photographed by NASA – until she was told that, admittedly, those colours were added by the NASA scientists...
.:. The recent case of Rohini Devasher (New Delhi, 1978) is quite different, as she entered the world of art with a visual perspective and, unlike Anderson, has always been a passionate amateur astronomer. Not only, Devasher's culture is particularly open-minded, addressing literature, philosophy, ecology, and the history of science, to the point that she was awarded a dual residency at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland, and the International Center for Theoretical Sciences in Bengaluru, India, in 2023. This happened after a conspicuous series of solo exhibitions in America, Asia and Europe.
.:. Devasher's art project currently exhibited in Milan is a most recent one, celebrating her as the recipient of the Deutsche Bank Artist of the Year award 2024. Not surprisingly, video installations and wall-mounted artworks focus on the sky, on stars, on observatories, and, most of all, light.
