Munch. Il grido interiore
September 14, 2024 through January 26, 2025
The
Munchmuseet in Oslo keeps eight versions of Edvard Munch's most famous work,
The Scream, one of which is currently on loan in Milan. Iconic as it may be, it's not the pièce de résistance of this important exhibition, as curators have centred on the artist's personality and his milieu. The title translates as "The inner scream", insisting on the relationship between the artworks and the man.
.:. Munch (1863-1944) is often portrayed as a maudit, a haunting artist. Indeed, he admitted that “illness,
insanity, and death were the black angels that kept watch over my cradle and accompanied me all my life.” But he was part of a circle of intellectuals in
Kristiania (as Oslo was called at the time) whose members opposed bourgeois narrow-mindedness, and hung out with trendsetting playwrights like Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg to the point of portraying them.
.:. Accurate commentary by the Arthemisia producers takes visitors on a journey with one hundred works, with interesting remarks about the evolution of Munch's colour
palette. After the last room, the well-stocked museum shop offers plenty souvenirs; Milan also provides the opportunity to get to know Norway better: a wide selection of
Norwegian films is scheduled not far from the Palazzo Reale until the end of January 2025.
