What are all those marble blocks here for? Why does a web of cables connect wooden boxes and small fountains? And why do the wooden boxes look as sound equalizers?
.:. That's what they are, in fact, equalizers. Atoui (Beirut, 1980, currently living in Paris, France) was born creative as a musician, and it shows. The exhibition should not be approached as a collection of artworks like any other. Rather, it's all about discreet
sounds designed to interact with visitors' behaviour. Transparent cabins may be entered and operated to perceive the feeling in full. Water, too, provides a substantial component here and there.
.:. Atoui doesn't like the word "collaborate". He likes "
cooperate" better. He cooperated with the Hangar's staff to produce this
Improvisation in 10 days, and visitors are cooperating with the artist towards the end of the Milanese Winter, a long awaited Spring and Summer. It's a continuously evolving cycle of instruments and people, with a special performance scheduled for May 29.
.:. In the light of the Hangar's
Shed, the cycle is a re-elaboration of three previous ones:
Souffle continue (air),
Rain (water), and
Waters/Witness (sounds of harbours), the latter developing research and sampling performed in Athens (hence the Pentelic marble blocks), Abu Dhabi, Beirut, Istanbul, Porto, Singapore, and Sydney.
.:. This is Atoui's first solo exhibition in Italy, after similar experiences in countries like Germany, Australia, the USA, Portugal and France. Also, you may remember his contributions to Kassel's Documenta (2012) and the Venice Biennale (2019).
