no slideshow .:. An absolutely unique and nearly unbelievable collection of ancient Roman statues is finally open to the general public. Ok. But why in Milan?
.:. It's a long story, and of a temporary event only. It was in Rome that the Torlonias gathered a number of outstanding ancient artworks, always kept private though. As The Economist writes, "In 1875 Prince Alessandro Torlonia created a museum that came to host 620 pieces (several hundred others have remained ever since at Villa Albani, the family’s residence in Rome, where they can be viewed by appointment). But even illustrious travellers struggled to get into the museum."
.:. A solution has been provided by the main Italian bank, who owns the Gallerie d'Italia museum networks, and has been historically based in Milan. To quote The Economist again, "After Milan, an international tour is planned. But that too is the subject of painstaking and protracted discussion. And a new permanent home for the Torlonias’ extraordinary collection has yet to be chosen."
.:. As usual, Milan is a temporary solution, and Rome a definitive unsolved problem.
