Most of us know about Sambonet as a cutlery and tableware firm established in Vercelli, Piedmont, in 1856, and a well-known brand in the field. Roberto Sambonet however (Vercelli, 1924-Milano, 1995) was much more than a member of the family. He’s currently the focus in one of the exhibitions that the Triennale di Milano has planned to pay homage to leading Italian artists and designers from the 20th century. They are taken into consideration not simply from a professional or an historical point of view, but as people, too. As for
Enzo Mari, Alessandro Mendini and Gae Aulenti – which the Triennale is celebrating this decade –
personality and affections can explain the roots of creativity even better than outstanding objects or successful products.
.:. A good example of this approach is provided by the hundreds of specially made
postcards that Sambonet – the artist – sent to his kids to keep in touch with them after his family split, and are collectively exhibited at the Triennale as a core of the setting. These pieces of paper are funny, colourful, clever, and instructive. Most of all, they are moving.
.:. The effectiveness of the exhibition may be summarized by underlying that 1,800 square meters accommodate 1,800 pieces: paintings, drawings, portraits, prints, panels, and of course tableware, placed on simple
tables, hanging from the ceiling, commented by large black-and-white sheets on the walls. Nothing looks crowded, anyway. It’s a miracle to get lost in.
