Oltre il ritratto. Il restauro visibile della Dama
October 14, 2024 through January 31, 2025
A fascinating young lady from 15th-century Florence has been the
icon of the Poldi Pezzoli Museum for a century and a half. Her profile
portrait is certainly the best in a series of four painted by Piero del Pollaiolo, an eminent Renaissance artist. The other three paintings are now in Berlin (Gemäldegalerie), Florence (Uffizi) and New York (Metropolitan). Though the lady is just one in the number of Old Masters' treasures owned by the Milanese museum, she has definitely contributed in placing the Poldi Pezzoli among the best art collections in the world.
.:. Time goes by, however. Some seventy years after her last restoration, the lady deserved a
check-up. Not a make-up, anyway.
.:. Scientific analyses involving technical universities and including axial computerized tomography have been carried out on her skin, her pigments and even her wooden table, only to conclude that the lady's shape is good enough. Just some delicate intervention is advisable.
.:. What's outstanding in the current process is that it's run
live. If you come and visit repeatedly the Poldi Pezzoli during the next months, you will see how the young lady gets younger in the glass case that's hosting her. Restorer Carlotta Beccaria can be seen in person at work on October 14, 16, 17 and 18.
.:. By the way, a
reunion of the four young ladies were performed in the Milanese museum between 2014 and 2015. Another
extraordinary meeting of artworks (by Piero della Francesca, in this case) from Lisbon, London, New York and Milan took place here in summer 2024. Not bad, uh?
