From Bellagio, an ideal stopover in our itinerary, the best thing to do is to take another boat or car-ferry to Varenna, on the eastern shore of Lake Como.
You can also reach Varenna driving directly either from Como (follow the signs for Lecco, Lurago d'Erba and then for Bellano and Varenna) or from Milan (take the toll-free highway no. 36).
At the same height as Bellagio and Menaggio but on the eastern side of the lake is
Varenna. For centuries it was just a small fishing village but the regular layout of its streets still points to its origins as a Roman castrum.
A
Passeggiata degli Innamorati, or Lovers' Walk, runs along the water's edge, connecting the centre of Varenna with Olivedo and the landing stage where the ferries, boats and hydrofoils that ply the waters of Lake Como come and go.
The lakeside walk links the various quarters of the village which, built on an incline, has countless stepped alleys and steep paths that represent a challenge for visitors who are less than fit. Looking back at Varenna from the lake its houses appear to form a colourful pyramid, topped by the steep wooded slopes above.
